With Mediterranean beaches, the exciting world of football, and delicious food, it is no wonder Spain is a dream remote work country for many. Thanks to its fantastic weather, rich cultural life, and endless opportunities for entertainment, there is no doubt the land of paella is one of the best places to live out that digital nomad life.
Unfortunately, currently, Spain doesn't have an official digital nomad visa. Instead, those interested may only apply for a Non-Lucrative Visa, which is aimed at self-sufficient or retired people. With the visa, working is permitted, but remote work can be considered a grey area. Luckily, the situation is about to change. Recently, the Spanish government has submitted an official proposal for the Spain digital Nomad visa, which the parliament has to approve. It is expected that the visa should be available sometime in 2022.
Currently, there is not a lot of clear information, but this is what is speculated:
- The visa will focus on startups because Spain wishes to introduce new businesses in their economy.
- It seems that digital nomads will be allowed to spend six months or five years in the country. That means there will probably be multiple digital visas available.
- The legislation includes tax breaks, mostly for businesses that decide to move to Spain.
- Those who wish to apply will probably need proof of remote work (outside of Spain) and a valid passport.
- It is expected that potential digital nomads will have to show a probable income minimum, bank statements as well as proof of health insurance.
Finding reasons why working remotely in Spain could be attractive is not hard. Most likely, digital nomads will have the opportunity to travel within the Schengen region, enjoy the wonderful digital nomad communities throughout the country and fast wifi, as well as the number of coworking spaces Spain has to offer.
